Travel from Ulaanbaatar to the rolling green valleys of Central Mongolia, where you’ll stay with herders, ride horses across open steppes, and learn timeless skills passed down through generations.

You’ll help milk livestock, share homemade dairy products, and join evening conversations by the hearth. Between nomadic stays, you’ll explore the historical capital Karakhorum and its ancient monastery, then head east to the semi-gobi for a taste of Mongolia’s diverse landscapes.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Ulaanbaatar & city exploration

Your guide will meet you at the airport or your hotel and take you into the heart of Ulaanbaatar. Today is about getting a first feeling of Mongolia before heading out to the countryside.
Visit Gandan Monastery, the main active Buddhist monastery in the city, and watch local people spinning prayer wheels and offering butter lamps. Continue to the Chinggis Khaan Museum to learn about Mongolia’s imperial history and see how the country changed from ancient times to the modern era. Walk through Sukhbaatar Square, surrounded by important government buildings and the statue of Chinggis Khaan, and get a short introduction to the city’s layout. In the afternoon, visit the Bogd Khan Winter Palace Museum, once the residence of Mongolia’s last king and spiritual leader.
In the evening, enjoy a traditional art performance that usually includes throat singing, folk songs, and contortion. Welcome dinner is included.

Day 2: Drive to the Orkhon Valley – Nomadic Family Stay

After breakfast, leave the city behind and start your drive towards the Orkhon Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its wide open pastures and long nomadic history. The drive takes most of the day with stops for photos and lunch along the way. By afternoon, you arrive at your host nomadic family’s ger. You will be welcomed with traditional milk tea and homemade dairy products, then settle into your guest ger. The rest of the day is for getting to know your hosts, seeing their livestock and learning how they manage daily life with the seasons. You can join in simple activities such as milking animals, collecting water, or helping with dinner preparation. In the evening, enjoy a home cooked meal and a quiet night under the stars.

Day 3: Immerse in Nomadic Lifestyle

Wake up to the sounds of animals around the ger and enjoy a simple countryside breakfast with your host family. Today you spend a full day in the Orkhon Valley. In the morning, start your horseback ride across the valley. Your local horse guide will match you with a suitable horse. Ride through rolling hills, riverside meadows and lava fields shaped by ancient eruptions. Even if you are a beginner, the pace is relaxed and focused on the experience rather than speed. In the afternoon, visit the famous Orkhon Waterfall. You can walk down to the canyon floor to feel the spray from the falls or stay at the top to enjoy the view. It is also a nice place for short walks and photos. Return to your host family in the late afternoon. Spend another evening with the family, sharing stories and watching how they care for their animals before night falls.

Day 4: Karakhorum & Erdene Zuu Monastery

After breakfast, say goodbye to your host family and start driving towards Kharkhorin, the site of the ancient capital of the Mongol Empire.On arrival, visit the Kharkhorin Museum which gives a compact but meaningful overview of how the city developed during Chinggis Khaan’s time and what remains have been discovered. Then continue to Erdene Zuu Monastery, the oldest Buddhist monastery in Mongolia, surrounded by its iconic white stupas. Explore the temple courtyards and listen to your guide’s stories about Buddhism in Mongolia. In the late afternoon, check in at your ger camp. Tonight you stay at The Secret of Silk Road, a comfortable ger camp with a nice atmosphere, hot showers, and a peaceful setting outside town. You can walk around the camp area or simply relax after a few active days.

  • Accommodation: Traditional ger camp on the Orkhon river shore with shared flush toilets and showers; twin or triple sharing depending on booking time availability.
Day 5: Semi-Gobi Experience & Camel Ride

Today you drive to Elsen Tasarkhai, often called the semi Gobi, where rolling sand dunes meet grassland and rocky hills in one compact area. The drive is shorter, so there is time to enjoy the road and take photos on the way.
On arrival, visit a local camel breeding family and learn how they live with their Bactrian camels in this mixed landscape. After a short introduction, take a camel ride along the dunes. The pace is gentle and suitable even for first time riders, giving you time to enjoy the scenery and silence.
In the afternoon, you can hike up the nearby dunes for sunset views, or simply relax at your ger camp. Dinner is served at the camp restaurant.

  • Accommodation: Stay in a traditional ger camp for tourists. Accommodation is twin or triple based regarding your trip booking time
Day 6: Return to Ulaanbaatar

After breakfast, start your drive back to Ulaanbaatar. You arrive in the afternoon and transfer to your hotel. If time allows, you can ask your guide for suggestions on last minute shopping, cafes, or viewpoints in the city. Your trip ends with drop off in Ulaanbaatar.
