Tour Program
Gandan Monastery
At 9:00 am, our guide and driver will pick you up from your accommodation or airport then visit the Gandan Monastery. The Monastery is a pilgrimage center of Mongolian Buddhist enthusiasts. It contains a statue of Megjid-Janraiseg (Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara – called Chenrezig in Tibetan) by 26.5 meters high. The original statue, made of copper, was erected in 1911 and was dismantled in 1937 by Soviet troops (the remains of the statue were subsequently used to make bullets during the siege of Leningrad). Following the fall of communist regimes, it was rebuilt in 1996 with donations of gold from Nepal and Japan. Adorned with gold and nearly 2,286 gemstones, the statue weighs over 20 tons and is covered with nearly 100 kg of silk clothing.
National History Museum
After the monastery, we will visit to the National History Museum of Mongolia. The museum is the biggest one with over 54000 exhibitions all about stunning history of modern day nomads from prehistoric period till 21st century.
Sukhbaatar Square - the Central Square of Ulaanbaatar city
Across from the National Museum, we will take a look at Sukhbaatar’s Square, the central square of Mongolia’s capital Ulaanbaatar. The official name was changed in 2013 in honor of Genghis Khan, considered the founding father of Mongolia, and then changed back in 2016. A large colonnade monument to Genghis Khan, as well as to Ögedei Khan, and Kublai Khan dominates the square’s north side directly in front of the Saaral Ordon (Government Palace). The center of the square features an equestrian statue of Damdin Sükhbaatar, one of the leaders of Mongolia’s 1921 revolution.
Optional: Visit of a cashmere factory store
After the square, we will visit to a factory store of world-famous high quality Mongolian cashmere with wide range of products.
Lunch Time
we will drive to a centrally located traditional superior restaurant with full course traditional meals for lunch.
Bogd Khan Palace Museum
After lunch break, we will continue our city tour to another historical yet beautiful place Bogd Khan Palace Museum. The Bogd Khan Palace is one of the most important monuments of Mongolian history and architecture. It was built between 1893 and 1906 and is composed of two parts: • The Summer Palace has seven temples and pagodas; it’s a magnificent well-preserved Chinese-styled place of worship; • The Winter Palace is a two-storeyed European-styled building built by Russian architects. For about twenty years, the Winter Palace had been serving as winter residence for the eighth Buddhist leader of Mongolia, the Bogdo Javzandamba Agvaanluvsan and his wife, Queen Dondogdulam. The door of the main temple is dedicated to the eighth Bogdo, leader of State and Church. It’s the last residence that still exists among the four residences where the last Bogdo Khan lived. The Palace was nationalized in 1924 then restored in 1961 and transformed in museum in 1974 under the name of Bogd Khan Museum.
Choijin Lama Temple Photography Visit
(Optional) Our next stop is another historical attraction next to modern day glass building, the Choijin Lama Temple Museum. The Choijin Lama Museum is composed of four temples and four arch doors. It houses collections of sacred and liturgical objects, notably masks of ceremony for the tsam dance (religious dance). You will also admire paintings, sculptures, embroideries and masks dating back from 17th, 18th, 19th and 20th centuries.
Traditional Cultural Performance at National Ensemble Palace
At 18 o’ clock, Mongolian traditional show at National Ensemble: folkloric dances, contortion, and of course Khoomi, the overtone singing.
