Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Ulaanbaatar & Visit Terelj NP

Today we pick you up from airport/hotel and take you to Terelj National Park. The national park is about 80km away from Ulaanbaatar city. On the way to the Terelj NP, you will visit Tsonjinboldog – massive equestrian statue complex of Chinggis Khaan. The statue is 40m tall and visitors can walk up on its 3rd floor for aerial view, and visit a small museum on its basement floor. Available to take photos in Mongolian traditional rope – deel and also with a hunter eagle near the statue complex. After that, we visit to Terelj NP: we visit Aryapala meditation temple, Melkhii Khad (turtle shaped rock).

  • Travel from the airport to Terelj NP via Ulaanbaatar: approximately 100 km on road.

Day 2: Travel to Tsagaan Suvarga - Colorful Clay Cliffs in the Gobi

After breakfast at the ger camp, we drive south to the Mongolian Gobi. Today we visit Tsagaan Suvarga. Once was an ancient sea bed, different minerals gives rise to different colours to form the face of the cliffs. Enjoy hiking through the colourful natural cliffs. The Gobi sunset offers you an opportunity to shoot incredible photos and take an advantage of the moment. Overnight in a nomadic family’s ger near the Tsagaan Suvarga Cliffs.

  • Travel time: 260 km on road and 60-70km on dirt road. Approximately 6 hours of driving.

Day 3: Travel to Yolin Am or Eagle Valley- the Jevel in the Gobi desert

Today we set off to Dalanzadgad, a provincial town in southern Mongolia. In Dalanzadgad, we will explore ‘Yolin Am Valley’, a jewel in the middle of the Gobi. The valley has narrow canyons with fresh streams that flow through the Zuun Saikhan Mountain. The sheer rock walls stand 200 m, and the canyon has stunning green meadows with a thick glacier layer that is deeply set between the walls. We trek along the canyon for about 2hours, and you may get a glimpse of rarely seen Argali – a mountain sheep, Ibex – wild goat and Lammergeier. After exploring Yoyn Am, we drive north to get to our ger camp where we overnight.

  • Travel time: 210 km on road and 80 km off road driving. Approximately 6 hours of driving. Short photo stops and tea breaks are available en route to the Yolin Am Valley

Day 4: Explore Khongorin Els - Mongolian sand dunes

This morning, we will have breakfast at the ger camp, and continue our Gobi journey to Khongor sand dunes. En route to the dunes, you will enjoy the stunning backdrop as you drive around 4-5 hours west, towards the vast Gobi landscape. We will visit a camel herder family and familarize ourselves with their nomadic lifestyle. Once we visit, we do camel trek through the Khongoryn Els dunes and Khongoryn River briefly. There will always be time for climbing and exploring the dunes – best at sunrise or sunset.

  • Travel time: Approximately 5-6 hours off road driving. Short photo stops and tea breaks are available en route to Khongoryn Els.

Day 5: Bayan Zag - The Flaming Cliffs in the Gobi

This morning, we will have breakfast at the ger camp, and continue our Gobi journey to Khongor sand dunes. En route to the dunes, you will enjoy the stunning backdrop as you drive around 4-5 hours west, towards the vast Gobi landscape. We will visit a camel herder family and familarize ourselves with their nomadic lifestyle. Once we visit, we do camel trek through the Khongoryn Els dunes and Khongoryn River briefly. There will always be time for climbing and exploring the dunes – best at sunrise or sunset.

Day 6: Visit Ongy Monastery Ruin

Depart to Ongy monastery ruin, a journey of approximately 5 hours driving. Upon arrival, you will explore the ruin of the Buddhist monastery, which once was a bustling pilgrimage area for Buddhists in the 18-19th century, before it was affected by anti-religious purges. En route to the Ongy Monastery, we will stopover at Bayan Zag – the “flaming cliffs” for a photo stop or a coffee break.  After we arrive at Ongy Monastery, you will walk around 30 minutes up a dirt path to the ruins. Also, it is possible for sightseeing excursions between hills, and on the shore of the Ongy river, the main source of drinking water for the Gobi people.

  • Travel time: Approximately 7 hours of driving off road.
  • Meal(s): Breakfast + Lunch + Dinner 
  • Accommodation: We will stay in a ger camp with good facilities including a western toilet, shower and body massage.
Day 7: Visit Kharkhorin town - an ancient capital of the Mongol empire
Our team will head to Kharkhorin town today. The town was the former capital for the world’s largest contiguous empire for over 40 years. In Kharkhorin city, we will visit a museum, has many exhibitions which show the history of Mongolian nomadic life from hunter gatherers’ period till most powerful and consummate empire throughout the world. After the museum, we will visit Erdenezuu monastery, the biggest Buddhist Monastery Museum in Mongolia. Which has many expensive and precious Buddhist artworks from the 17th century including the mould deities of gold and silver, thankas, split paintings and manuscripts. In the evening before sunset, you have time to wander on the bank of the Orkhon River. Overnight in a ger camp.
  • Travel time: Today we drive for a long journey, an averagely of 7-8 hours off road driving
  • Meal(s): Breakfast + Lunch + Dinner
  • Accommodation: You will stay in a traditional ger camp on historical Orkhon River’s shore. The Ger camp has a western toilet & shower. 
Day 8: Visit back to Ulaanbaatar

In the morning, we will have breakfast at the camp and drive back to Ulaanbaatar city. En route to the capital city, we will behold the Mongolian pristine steppe landscape. We will arrive in Ulaanbaatar city in the afternoon, and you have time for visiting the world’s number one cashmere store and Mongolian souvenir shops or relax in your hotel until dinner. In the evening, our farewell dinner will take place in a restaurant. Overnight in a hotel.

Day 9: Naadam Festival 2025 Opening Ceremony & Archery Contest
In the morning, we will have breakfast at the hotel and visit central stadium for the Naadam Festival openings. The Naadam begins today and the group will get the opportunity to witness the opening ceremony, which features extravagantly costumed parades, traditional music, dance and historical reenactments. Truly a sight to behold! The archery competition also takes place today. Overnight in a hotel.
  • Travel time: 3-5km drive in the city.

Day 10: Naadam Festival 2025: Mongolian Wrestling & Horse Race

Today you’ll have breakfast at your hotel then visit Khui Dolon Khudag – the site where horse race held. After the horse race, drive to the central stadium to watch wrestling competition. In the evening our farewell dinner will take place near your hotel. Overnight in a hotel.

Day 11: Departure
Today is the end of the “Mongolian Gobi & Naadam Festival 2025” small-group trip. We will transfer you to the airport in time for your international flight. Have a nice trip back to your home and thank you for choosing Way To Nomads.
